Q&A WITH AGGIE WR BETHEL JOHNSON

BL: As a senior, what can you do to alter the course of this season and change the team's approach to the games?

Johnson: "I know it's hard to believe, but I really don't say much in the form of yelling or getting too vocal out there. Don't get me wrong, I play with a lot of emotion, I'm just not a big talker on the field. I think that some of our younger guys don't have the same perspective that we seniors do. I used to be in the same boat, but now I know the urgency that it takes to play with on every single snap. I know that you have to take advantage of every opportunity. Being a senior, I know this is our last shot. The emotion is in our group of seniors, but we have this saying 'walk, don't talk.' Hopefully, from here on out everyone on this team will play with a sense of urgency and know that the time is now. I really think we'll have intense practices from now on and start making the plays to win games."

BL: Have you noticed a sudden sense of urgency on the part of your teammates?

Johnson: "I think so. I don't think any of us want to be home for the holidays. I would be very surprised if we didn't come together as a team and start capitalizing on the opportunities that we have. Speaking for the offense, we're playing with a lot of confidence. If we fall behind, we know that we can come right back and score. Like I said, we just need to play with the proper emotion and hang in there long enough to win games."

BL: When people mention A&M in the Humanitarian Bowl, they are assuming that you will finish the season with a couple of losses. Does that motivate you or the team?

Johnson: "I learned a long time ago not to worry about what people say. Unless they know the future, or unless they're God, people that are assuming what's going to happen to us are just guessing. We are up against it, there's no doubt about it. If there's one thing I know about this year's team, we're very unpredictable, so hopefully, we'll surprise everyone who doubts us. The good news is that nothing is decided yet and we've still got a couple of chances to change things on the field."

BL: If you had to point to one thing, what is the biggest difference in the offense versus a month ago?

Johnson: "Overall, it's really just that our confidence is at an all-time high. We're more confident in each other and in the system. We know exactly what we have to do. After the Virginia Tech game, we just decided, as a unit, that we can't always rely on our defense. Like coach Sumlin told us, we had to make a name for ourselves. That's what we've been doing."

BL: How sweet would it be to go out with a couple of big season-ending wins?

Johnson: "It would be a great, great feeling. If everyone else has lost confidence, then that's their opinion. We haven't lost confidence in ourselves. You can lose on any given Saturday, and we know that we can win just as easily, against anyone. We know we can do that. It would be really special to go out with two wins over top-five teams."

BL: Who steps up if Jamaar Taylor can't go?

Johnson: "I don't think Jamaar is going to sit out for a long period of time. I had the same type of injury against Kansas. It's a injury that you have to work out I think. If there's any chance that Jamaar can play, he will. He probably can't stand sitting out more than anyone out there. In our group of receivers, if anyone misses time, we have several guys who can step up, just like last year, when I was out."

BL: Is the future of the receiver position at A&M better now than it was when you got here?

Johnson: "We're going to have several more years with great receivers in this program. Next year, there will be another good mix of old and young receivers. The upcoming group of young guys will probably be better than who we have now someday."

BL: Are you looking forward to taking on Rod Babers and Nathan Vasher of Texas. I know your last trip to Austin didn't go as planned?

Johnson: "I go against two of the best corners everyday in practice. When the show starts, the show's going to start. What I mean is, we'll find out what happens against them when we line up the day after Thanksgiving. Those are two good corners, but I don't worry about lining up in front of anyone. I know what I can do and, really, I can't wait for the challenge."

BL: Did the fact that you almost had football taken away from you change your approach to the game?

Johnson: "Not really, it's just that when you have to sit out, you tend to see things from a different perspective. There are a lot of things that I took for granted. Now I know what guys that came before me meant when they say to make every play count. I understand that now as a senior. The injuries played a part in it, but it's also part of the process of becoming a senior and a leader. It's just growing up."

BL: After all you've been through, are you satisfied with the way you've managed to finish your career?

Johnson: "Yes, I think from an individual standpoint, I went out the way I wanted to. The thing that I really wanted to do was go out as a champion. I came close in high school in both football and track, so I really wanted to leave here with a championship ring. God has a reason for everything and if you try to figure Him out, it will just frustrate you. I'm happy with the way I closed my career out, but I think it would be a whole lot better to go out with three wins."

BL: Has the fact that you are A&M's all-time leading receiver set in yet?

Johnson: "There was an article about me this summer that kind of said I was overrated. I don't play for the media, I play for my team, but I did take that to heart. Most of these writers have never played the game, but that article motivated me to prove the person who wrote that article wrong. I can't really enjoy the record right now because we've been losing games, but it's something that I hope to be able to look back on and take pride in."
